Barry “Bazmatronics” Edwards (birthname Barry John Edwards), born in Chester and currently based in Wales, UK, is a guitarist, composer, and improviser known for his adventurous and atmospheric approach to sound. From early musical exposure through jazz and improvisation to conservatoire training at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Edwards has built a practice that merges tradition and experimentation, sonic texture and spontaneous gesture.

Using an array of tools — extended guitar techniques, live looping, ambient electronics — and occasionally alternate instruments (e.g. wooden flute and drums), his performances often live on the border between composed work and live improvisation. The name “Bazmatronics” (or “Bazmatron”) was adopted early on via peers at Birmingham Conservatoire (in particular Fred Thelonious Baker), and reflects both a creative alter-ego and the experimental process Edwards embodies.

He has collaborated with many established names in the UK improvisation scene (Paul Dunmall, Neil Metcalfe, Mark Sanders, among others), and his performances have taken place in diverse settings, from free improvisation concert series (for example Mopomoso) to curated experimental gigs.

In addition to live performance, Barry composes for media; his credits include work for the Netflix series Spy Ops, Apple TV K-Pop Idols. His commitment to local arts infrastructure is shown in roles such as Building & Events Manager at Hafan Yr Afon in Newtown, Powys, where he helps to shape local events and support community engagement.

Through his recorded output (see Discogs entry) and live work, Bazmatronics continues to push the boundaries of what improvised music can be: immersive, textural, subtle yet confronting, intimate yet expansive. Audiences are invited into sound-worlds that shift, dissolve, cohere, and transform.

“There was a genuine feeling of having been taken on a musical journey with Edwards genuinely succeeding in his aim of creating “order from chaos.”
